Tomboy’s Antonym and her man head to the Wakefiled Inn and here’s what he thought about the couples retreat.
This was my first visit the Wakefield Inn Spa and my first experience with a couples massage. I have to admit I was a bit apprehensive about the whole thing – a massage is one thing but I was a bit nervous about the couples aspect. In the end it was a great experience.
The Wakefield Inn is situated just off the main road in Wakefield, Quebec – it’s about a 45 minute drive from downtown Ottawa. Just far enough so that you feel you’re outside the city, but not so far that it’s an inconvenience. Wakefield is a cute little town with a bunch of shops, restaurants, and pubs. Ottawa bureaucrats routinely escape their busy schedules for a light lunch and walk along the river in Wakefield.
As you pull up to the Wakefield Inn, you can immediately hear the rushing of a large waterfall that flows right next to the building. Feel free to explore the grounds around the Inn and take in the fresh sights, sounds and smells of nature. The spa is located on the lower level of the building which gives it a perfect view of the falls. My girlfriend and I were greeted by a friendly attendant and directed to the changing rooms to get ready for our massage.
The changing rooms, waiting areas, and hallways are nicely but simply decorated. There was relaxing music playing. I put on my robe and sat down next to with my
girlfriend to wait in the lounge area while we drank tea. After a few minutes we were introduced to our masseuses who were friendly and upbeat. We filled out the requisite paperwork and were led into the massage room. There were two tables side by side and soothing music playing on the sound system.
The massage itself was very relaxing but not overly intense. At several points I drifted off to sleep because of how relaxed I felt. I’m a beginner when it comes to massages but I found the technique of the masseuse excellent. There was no interaction between my girlfriend and me during the massage but it was fun to know she was in the room and getting the same relaxing treatment as me.
After a one hour massage we were left to put our robes back on and go back to the waiting area. We got some water and then decided to venture outside in the brisk spring air. The cool water from the falls occasionally sprays up onto the patio in a light refreshing mist – I can imagine this would be even more enjoyable on a hot summer day. We brought our bathing suits along for the day, so we sat in the hot tub enjoying the sunny day. We lounged on some patio furniture and compared notes on our massages before getting changed and heading into town for lunch.
All in all an incredibly relaxing escape from the daily grind.
